Sonnet Marathon 2023: watch videos here

On April 23, 2020, in the midst of the first COVID-19 surge, Irondale held its first-ever Sonnet Marathon. It was a virtual event, attended worldwide by participants aged from 9 to 90, comprising over 8 hours of recitations of Shakespeare’s sonnets! Over 100 people participated including Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes; Grammy nominee Rufus Wainwright; comedian, actress and jazz singer Lea DeLaria; Tony winner Cady Huffman; Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega; Blue Bloods and The Sopranos actor John Ventimiglia; principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre James Whiteside; and NYC downtown darling Kenyon Phillips.

Now, 3 years later, Irondale is taking another shot at the Sonnet Marathon in a different format. This will be a month-long marathon starting on April 1st and audience members may choose to participate in different ways.

On April 1st, we will kick off the marathon with a two-part event:

From 2-5 PM, find us at Cuyler Gore Park with an open mic for players or passersby to recite one of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets. Pick your favorite ahead of time or select one on the spot and let the words fly.

(We will be recording videos of all performances and we will share them online throughout the month as part of the month-long marathon.)

Then, at 6 PM, let's bring the party back inside The Space at Irondale for a fun Shakespeare Trivia, Games and Improv Night. Bring your theatre-geek friends and we will crown the winning team. Drinks will be available at the bar.

If you are not in the New York area and want to participate in the month-long online marathon, you can record your own video and submit it to us at any time during the month of April. Click on the button "Register to Participate" to fill out the form and submit your video.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES IT POSSIBLE

SUPPORT

Your gift will support: the next big Ensemble production, our Youth Programs and To Protect, Serve and Understand - the groundbreaking program where police officers and civilians learn to communicate through theatre. And because we believe that art is so necessary to the life and health of a community we will make all tickets as close to being FREE, as we possibly can. New York City budget cuts have taken a chunk out of our budget and the only way we can make them up at this point in the year is with your help.
